TRIESTE
Trieste, a magnificent port city on the Adriatic Sea, is a fascinating place where history, different cultures and a unique Mediterranean atmosphere come together. Its grand palaces, elegant squares and picturesque streets reflect the city's rich Habsburg heritage, while the lively seafront promenade invites visitors to relax and enjoy a coffee in one of Trieste's historic cafés.
At the crossroads of Italian, Slovenian and Central European influences, Trieste offers a unique blend of architecture, culture and cuisine. It is a city where the past and present meet, creating a distinctive atmosphere that makes Trieste well worth discovering.
Your half-day trip to Trieste begins with a visit to Piazza Unità d'Italia, one of the city's most impressive landmarks and one of the largest squares in Europe. Located directly beside the sea, the square is surrounded by magnificent historic buildings, including the Town Hall, Palazzo Modello, Palazzo Stratti, the Government Palace, Palazzo Pitteri and the former Lloyd building.
The square is also home to the Fontana dei Quattro Continenti, as well as several historic monuments that reflect Trieste's long and fascinating history.
From Piazza Unità d'Italia, you will continue to Piazza della Borsa, one of the main historic squares in Trieste and the former economic centre of the city. The square is dominated by the impressive neoclassical building of the Old Stock Exchange, today home to the Chamber of Commerce of Trieste.
You will also see the monument to Emperor Leopold I and Casa Bartoli, an elegant Art Nouveau building designed by architect Max Fabiani. Nearby is the historic Tergesteo Palace, whose covered gallery provides a pedestrian connection towards the area around the Teatro Verdi opera house.
Your next stop will be the Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Spyridon, one of the most distinctive religious buildings in the centre of Trieste. You will have the opportunity to admire its impressive architecture and richly decorated interior.
From the church, you will walk towards Ponte Rosso and the picturesque Canal Grande, one of the most recognisable sights in the city centre. The canal leads towards the Church of Sant'Antonio Nuovo and is surrounded by historic buildings and elegant cafés.
Along the way, your guide will also show you the fascinating Palazzo Gopcevich, built in the 19th century and known for its distinctive façade inspired by Venetian architecture.
MIRAMARE CASTLE
After exploring the historic centre of Trieste, you will continue to Miramare Castle, one of the most beautiful attractions on the Adriatic coast.
Built in the 19th century for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, Miramare Castle stands dramatically on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea.
The castle is surrounded by a magnificent park and gardens, offering spectacular views of the Adriatic and a peaceful setting away from the city. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to stroll through the beautiful gardens and admire the elegant architecture and historic atmosphere of the castle.
Miramare is one of the best-preserved examples of 19th-century historic architecture in the region and provides a fascinating insight into the life of the Habsburg imperial family.
At the end of your visit, you will return to Ljubljana with memories of a wonderful half-day experience combining the history, architecture and Mediterranean atmosphere of Trieste and Miramare Castle.
